He-Man, 1987

There is going to be a new live action He-man movie coming out in 2026.

Several different websites have updates and cast info.

With that in mind, I've been thinking of the first live action movie from way back in 1987.

That movie was deemed a disaster by most metrics.

I did enjoy it myself and have looked at the final fight scene a few times over the years.

In my opinion, there were several aspects that I felt the studio and producers got right.

The 1987 live-action film "Masters of the Universe," starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, might have faced mixed reviews and box office struggles, but it certainly had its redeeming qualities. 1. No Prince Adam Transformation

One of the most significant departures from the original animated series was the decision to exclude Prince Adam. By focusing solely on He-Man, the film streamlined its narrative and kept the story tightly focused on the battle against Skeletor. This choice eliminated the need for the transformation sequence, allowing the film to jump straight into the action and maintaining He-Man's heroic persona throughout. I do think that they should have done one spectacular sort of transformation; in the final fight at the gate, when He-Man gets the magic sword from Skeletor's magic holding box. He does say most of the iconic phrase. Once, right here at that moment, He-Man should have done the whole "By the Power of Grayskull".......then the lightning and other special effeects, and finally..., "I Have the Power"

2. Omitting Orko

The absence of Orko, the comical and magical sidekick from the animated series, was another notable change. While Orko added a lot of humor and light-heartedness to the original show, his exclusion helped the movie maintain a more serious and grounded tone. This decision allowed the film to focus on the epic struggle between good and evil without the additional subplot of Orko's magical misadventures.

3. Streamlined Storytelling

Without the inclusion of He-Man's parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena, the film avoided additional backstory and character development that could have complicated the plot. This streamlined approach kept the movie's narrative straightforward and action-oriented, making it easier for audiences to follow, especially those unfamiliar with the animated series.

4. Iconic Character Portrayals

Dolph Lundgren's portrayal of He-Man captured the essence of the character with his physical presence and charisma. Similarly, Frank Langella's performance as Skeletor brought a menacing and memorable villain to life, leaving a lasting impression on fans. The film's character designs and costumes, particularly for Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, have become iconic and are still appreciated by fans today.
